‘DO YOU REALIZE THE extent of your actions?’

‘I love Burk, father. I am not going to marry Avius. I won’t.’

‘You will. You have a duty to your kingdom—just as I do. It is forbidden to marry outside your station. He’s a soldier, Syeira. A commoner. He will be dealt with, and you will do as you are told.’

‘And my mother was of noble birth was she father?’ Syeira demanded coldly and took great delight in watching the colour drain from his face. ‘I know the truth. I know she came from the other side. She didn’t die. She brought me back and she left. Did you make her leave?’

‘No I did not.’

‘I don’t believe you. Why should I when you’ve led me to believe all this time she dies when I was a baby.’

‘She did die, Syeira,’ he said, losing some of his previous anger. But she was too furious to stop.

‘I’m going to cross and find her.’

‘You are not.’ He yelled.

‘It’s my duty to cross, remember father? You told me so on my eighteenth birthday.’

‘When I have passed on the throne to you, yes, but not before.’

‘I will find her, you can not stop me going back,’ she yelled defiantly.

‘I can and I have,’ he said, his voice cold as steel, as immoveable as rock. ‘I can no longer deny your marriage to Avius.’

At her stunned stare he continued woodenly, ‘We are heading for a war no one here can afford.is no other choice.’

‘Then use your precious knowledge father, do anything, but don’t use me as your bargaining chip,’ she spat angrily. ‘How could you hand me over to a man you don’t even trust? My life is worth that little to you?’

‘You continue to defy me at every turn, Syeira. First with this dalliance you have with my Captain of the Guard and now with this crossing business. If this is the only way I can stop you, then so be it. This is your duty, daughter. You are royalty!’

‘I did not ask to be royalty!’ And this was the crux of the problem. She felt no sense of duty towards her role. She never had and it had always been the biggest bone of contention between her father and herself. She didn’t belong here. She felt it. She knew it, and until now, she had no explanation for it.

‘This is for the best. It is done,’ he said wearily.

‘Well I am not!’ she declared scathingly. ‘I will never marry that man. I will die first,’ she shouted, leaving the room and running for the stables. There was a rush of cold night air, then an unspeakable terror washed through her, before it all vanished in a dense impenetrable fog.
